What is Metal Factor?
Metal Factor is a nonprofit partnership created to help Sri Lanka’s advertising industry to realize its dream of achieving world class standards and to gain global recognition for its work.
Metal Factor has been responsible for many programs to benefit the industry, very specially the youth. We have organized competitions at a national level to select promising young advertising professionals to represent the country at the Young Lions competitions at the Cannes Lions festival as well as giving opportunities to students to attend the much acclaimed Roger Hatchuel Academy at the Cannes Lions. Similarly, young professionals have also been selected to represent Sri Lanka at the Young Spikes competitions. Metal Factor also represents several publishers such as Archive and Contagious in Sri Lanka and also markets the Cannes Lions materials and other renowned annuals, books and periodicals. Metal Factor also supports the Cannes Prediction program conducted by Leo Burnett in partnership with the IAA Sri Lanka Chapter. They have also actively supported many training programs and events. The now popular Green Chillies festival is an initiative of Metal Factor which is staged in partnership with the industry bodies.
Who is behind Metal Factor?
Ranil de Silva a leading icon in Sri Lanka’s advertising industry is its founder. He together with his lifelong friend, colleague and adviser Shiromal Cooray are the partners of Metal Factor.
Ranil de Silva is a respected professional in Sri Lanka’s advertising industry. He counts nearly 30 years in the industry and is a respected leader. He was awarded the IAA Medal of Merit in 2010 in recognition of the contributions he has made towards the development of the industry. He started his career as a trainee at JWT and rose to become the head of the company. He later established Leo Burnett in Sri Lanka and has led it to its pinnacle through his passion and commitment. Ranil has also worked in Jakarta and Singapore and was also an International Vice President of JWT Worldwide. He has also served as a member of the Worldwide Board of Directors of the IAA and was the President of the IAA Sri Lanka Chapter for 2 terms.
Metal Factor enables Ranil to fulfill his commitment to the industry and to spur the industry’s progress. In fact Metal Factor provides Ranil the opportunity to develop the talent of young Sri Lankan advertising professionals by providing them with several opportunities to learn and to progress in their careers.
Besides advertising, Ranil is passionate about living life to the fullest. He enjoys travelling the world, catching up with his large circle of friends and appreciating art. A passion which he has developed into a CSR initiative under the banner of Leo Art. He says he ‘burns the candle at both ends, but is enjoying it!’
Shiromal Cooray: enjoyed an illustrious career in advertising firstly as JWT Colombo’s head of finance and later as the Regional Finance Director for Mojo based in Hong Kong. She also served as the Chief Operating Officer at JWT for a brief period. Currently she serves on the Board of Directors of Leo Burnett Solutions Inc., and was the Chairperson of Starcom Worldwide, Sri Lanka.
Today, she is at the helm of the travel industry and serves in the capacity of Managing Director, Jetwing Travels and also serves in several directorates within the Jetwing Group. She is well respected in Sri Lanka’s burgeoning travel industry and is a pivotal leader in the sector. She has made a name for herself beyond the shores of Sri Lanka. Shiromal is a finance professional who also holds an MBA. She has served in many capacities in several industry bodies and is an associate member of CIMA UK.
She is another passionate traveler who has seen the world and enjoyed many an adventure. She also loves to travel within Sri Lanka and says she is ‘truly awed by the natural beauty of her country’.
